BRIGHTON MARINA FISHING for the East and West breakwaters

BRIGHTON MARINA FISHING for the East and West breakwaters

ello world

Morning all 3 of you ! yep 3 confirmed and even daft enough to give me their names!, no need to worry though as my memory is shyte !.

So 1st thing is some news on wall openings. From this weekend Mark is extending NIGHT FISHING on the west to 24/7, yes , every night. Of course this is subject to the weather being ok & no needed repairs.
The extension is also open during the days and groups wishing to book a private session need a minimum of 10. To organise it please contact Mark either directly or contact shop with details and they can hook you up with mark
.
Also from this Saturday the EAST wall close time will move to 9pm, which is the best we can do for that wall. There will not be any further NIGHTs on the EAST due to the sheer level of disturbances and noise caused by 100 plus anglers moving through residential areas between 2 and 6am. TBH I think we were lucky that it was agreed that the wall could stay open beyond 6-7pm after some of the issues wardens had to deal with over the last 30 years at night. The up side is that residents are in a better frame of mind towards anglers as much of the disruptions caused has been greatly reduced. In many ways I think that we as anglers are lucky that the WEST wasnt closed at night or heavier restrictions put on us running both walls and keeping costs down.

I am aware there have been a few grumbles about how night fishing is now charged which is a straight £10 per person for 2 rods or 1 if thats all you use. Yes it now can cost more to fish at night than 2 rods during the day but firstly it was done to standardise the night charge and help the wardens speed the ticket process up, now they simply have to do a head count rather than check jnr numbers and even rod numbers, its easy to see when too many rods are on show etc.
There has been another benefit of the straight charge, It has reduced the number of non anglers at night being as they will also be charged to be on lower level and it was becoming a problem with larger and noisier numbers on the wall at night raising noise levels, litter levels and people trying to light BBQ’s. Overall this charge has greatly reduced problems from the WEST at night of which I believe benefits everyone.
To those grumbling about a fixed charge, look around, there are fewer issues than previous years and we dont have to run a members only scheme at night locking people out that want to randomly show up to fish the wall.
If anyone is unsure of the rules of the wall please check through this website as there is tons of info that will help your visit to the breakwaters when fishing.

Finally I have a catch report !
I caught a ball ! , there done the grandad thing even though im not.

Bass, yep there have been some decent bass caught off or very close to the walls, ive not included any pics at the moment as we all know what they look like even if many struggle to land em on a regular basis but I may trawl some posts on the FB group to see if there are any standouts i like
P.S> If you got a picv of a catch you think I may like for the galleries feel free to email em in and I will see what I can put into the galleries, after all its what they are there for and remember , the pics dont need to be the worlds best fish, I’m sure Ive put tons of tiddlers up on the galleries as well as some big fish so , send em in & don’t be shy, add your name or tell me u want no name, give me the info of what wall and when & i will see if i can add to a gallery or two.

Plaice, there are catches but they are a bit thin on ground this week as the may tod does its thing and colours everything it touches as well as a few conger, dogs yup they back, smooth hound pups are about , rays a bit slower this week and some mackerel spotted just offshore by the lure boats out there. The first horse mackerel were reported mid week on the west but no idea of the numbers . Bream catches are a bit slower this week as is in general much of the fishing. Id say the boats are faring better than we are atm.
Well thats it from me for today, dig out them pics folks & please dont be shy.
Until next time folks as usual I bid you all(3) ADIEU

Sunday roundup

Top of the list today
There will be NO NIGHT FISHING TONIGHT (SUN) due to high wind forecast.
While on the issue of high winds please be awre that on looking at the weeks forecasts it is highly likely that the WEST and possibly EAST may close TUES/WED.

As both readers 😉 may notice the lack of posts here this week. TBH it is an indication of how the last 5-6 days have been. Fairly typical of the damage that MAY ROT (algae) can do. Fish generally avoid it or try to swim under it, hence the bulk of the catches have been plaice and some dab. There have been bream but way down on the previous week. Bass are there for those with the know how & when. It truly has been a week of odds and sods with one exception
A cracking daytime conger of the East wall mid week that went 16.8lb, at time of typing I have the pic ready to upload onto the Marina gallery.
The rot is still heavy around the marina but showing signs that it is fading. We have 2-3 windy days next week and then over the Weekend a few days of Northerly breezes. With luck is should get blown out to sea and dispersed over the next 7-8 days.
Thats it tbh, sluggish days on the marina ATM but some inshore boats have had mackerel(1 or 2) so the signs are there. And with that…
I will again bid you both ADIEU

Strange,..

Well how strange, its taken me nearly a week to notice the double blocked post on last blog and, tbh I can’t be arsed to change it now so I guess it stays for now !
So other than today being the last day of the prem season is there much to get over excited about ? to be fair not a massive amount but there has been a change or two going on down on the fishy front.

So whats different ? not the rot thats for sure, with the small tides meaning slower water flow the the rot is not going anywhere very soon even though some are more hopeful than I am that they think its breaking, I dont agree BUT, yep there is always a but eh 🙂 well the but is that the fishing is actually not that bad. Yes maybe the quality is lacking a bit but over on the east there are good numbers of plaice (up n down on sizes) Bream have started to play nicely and even a few wrasse are being reported which Im hoping means that they will be better in numbers than the last 3 years. Sole are on the increase and dont seem to mind getting under the may rot even on low tides and they do make good eating. Conger and as someone else put it the other day to me “the return of the bl**dy dogs!” which for time of year I think is/maybe a good thing !, WTF U say 🙂 yep hear me out.
Am I the only person in Sussex that has seemed to notice when the dogs return during the may rot or to the end of it that the hounds then start to switch on their season ? surely not coincidence and I have a couple of ppl I want to talk to regarding this because….YES the hound numbers are rapidly going up. Perhaps its due to the annual incoming surge of the spider crab march perhaps Ive never really thought about when why the mutts & dogs start catching but im gonna look into it. My final species round up for the east… RAY no not the Mr Charles or Burns types but there have been some almost decent rays being had on the east ! go figure…
West to follow this

All in all for species counters the EAST is doing ok considering the rot, not convinced ? I will start rattling off the last 2 weeks species for ya, Plaice, Sole, Topknot, Flounder, Dab (honest) Conger, Bream, Wrasse (2 types), sand eel, sardines ! yup, Mackerel (here n there hard work) Bass, Shad, rumours of mullet ive yet to confirm high east, Thornback & Undulate rays, dog fish, pout & chan whiting (bit odd there) Pollack (both walls & small)Red Mullet, Gurnard, sadly the hoped for squid cuttle became a non starter but hopefully we get a more settled Autumn and can get an event up & running for that one evening.

So over to the WEST, now please I hope you both reading are not breath holding as its not as rosey looking as the EAST ATM. I took a wander along the West a couple of times this week and yes like the east, things are a bit better than I expected but the may rot is taking its full effect on the WEST with the smaller & slower tided but that doesnt mean its not worth fishing. Talk to most of the know it all gobby ones about bream and they will answer , high tide every time, na m8 cant get bream on the wall on small tides or on low tides blah blah blah… bullshite ! I had on both occasions of popping do been there on low crappy tides and you can smell the egg rot as you walk alongside the multi carpark !Funny how fast you stop noticing the smell though when you have been sniffing it year in year out for way too long!, anyhoo, I digress, while not many were fishing mid week I guess some have done their homework/research on the walls or just plain got a bit lucky. Both occasions there were ppl fishing on bays that I consider decent for bream and yes they were being caught right on low tide, not loads but enough to tick people over when catches can be few and far between on the west wall in full rot mode. Not only were bream active on low but so also were plaice with fair numbers also being caught from time to time. Now I realise most see the west as the go to for mackerel in the summer and is snag central but for those unable or unwilling to do the hike over to the east the west does still mid rot have something to offer people.

This weeks catches on the WEST ? Plaice, Bream, Bass, Sole, Pollack, mackerel, & dogfish, not as species happy as the east but it is very much different ground and it does have its reasons on why it tends to be the most fav wall to get too.
Well thats it for today, Im gearing up for the last game of the season at the amex so, until next time… I bid you both ADIEU 🙂

didnt realise..

Wow, Tuesday already, I must be getting senile in my old age, days just seem to blur or vanish into each other. Id have put money on it being Monday this morning !
Madness !
Right so what is going on since I last posted some guff to get you all sprinting onto the walls. Well….
The may rot is seemingly at full strength and quite thick on the small tides as well as low water. the bigger tides are proving defo fishable and worth while. Plaice are coming out on both walls, on the west the lower bays tend to be best but there are also spots higher up that are producing but I will say the best numbers are on the EAST. Bass, for those that know their stuff, they are catching em, look around for them lure anglers, They look a bit like the dudes that throw feathers out at 1st glance until you realise they are using smaller & lighter rods and often stood away on their own. Give them a watch and then go say high, they often like to chat & share info.
what else do we have for you, well for the4 eagle eyed there is a cracking red mullet posted to the marina gallery, caught by regular Lee Demario on the east and was weighed at 1lb 11oz, probably the largest ive seen in 20+ years for the marina. Bream are there in decent numbers usually over the high as well as a few wrasse and rays,(mostly thornbacks.) All in all considering how the may rot in the past has killed the fishing , this year things have continued to improve. There have and are still occasional catches of mackerel in small flurries although the early catches this month of a cuttle or 2 and a couple of squid ended up turning into a non even and thus justifies my cancelling the squid comp this spring despite some grumbles !.

I really must summon up the energy to get down onto one of the walls to at least have a dabble and say hi to a lot of the regular faces(new & old) but my energy levels dont always match my ambitions of getting out & fishing, the brain is more willing than the body , BUT I keep saying soon, the gear is packed ready to go so, soon 🙂

update

Night fishing has been extended not to Thurs through til Sun on the WEST wall only.
The EAST WALL will open later in the evening on nights that we west wall remains open, thus from this week inclusive the

EAST WALL will open
Mon/T/W 6am til 6pm then
THURS/F/S/S 6am til 8pm

Catch reports are on the up with bream being caught on both walls, Bass are doing ok and plaice are now quite common but as prior said many are still quite small so please keep an eye on keeping sensible sizes. There are still conger about & the occasional wrasse has been had. Like wise there are occasional rays as well. May rot seems better over the larger high tides which are bringing in 2-3 mackerel here & there. Yes they are being caught on feathers but they are hard work so bring some bait or you will be knackered from feathering all day for maybe one or 2 fish.
likewise missing is them spring squid!, wtf is going on? 2 years in a row hardly one to be seen! Ive no idea why, surely its not just that wild weather in March and much of April !, who knows ? answers on a postcard please. Yep we have moved the comp to the Autumn in the hope we can get one run and I have been chatting with Robin on the best ways to proceed with the squid event in future. Lets see what develops.
Im hearing the dredger is expected to start working in the marina very soon and may be as soon as Monday.
Things looking up quite quickly and the weather is playing ball with it looking glorious out there during the day , although night temps are a bit chilly.
So, clarity good on the big tides, very gloopy with may rot on the smaller and low tides. That egg smell is defo noticeable.
Finally there seems to be a blip in the weather next Mon& maybe Tues that may cause the walls to shut but that will get called nearer the day and posted to home page, thus,
Thats all folks and I will bid you, until next time ADIEU

update nights….

Night fishing this week on west wall
thurs/Fri/Sat/ and Sun 9th to 12th May

Things ticking over on both walls. May rot very evident in the water atm, probably the bigger tides will be the better to fish and most species tend to avoid the rot or try to live under it.

Bass catches a little slower this week or less being reported. Plaice are on the improve but again still please be aware of size regs as some are still quite small and a bit slow thickening up.
Bream and wrasse have been reported on the walls as well as a couple of species of Ray, congers still about as are the stubborn to go dogfish, perhaps if I start calling them catfish or summat else silly they may sound exotic and wanted :).
Temps are slowly increasing but there defo have been warmer years for the month of MAY !
not a great deal to say atm so I will leave you all and bid you ADIEU

night fishing

YES, YES, YES do ya get the drift 🙂
FRIDAY
SATURDAY and
SUNDAY
NIGHT FISHING defo all this weekend WEST WALL ONLY and I will look for a confirm that it will now be every weekend subject to confirm and obviously weather conditions

April ends !

…SHOP SPECIAL OFFER :- Competition IMAX F3 Beach shelter 3 for sale reduce to £75 also some PENN Afinity 3 reels, reduced from £200 now £150.F

Poor old April!, she promised so much and in the end bowed out with a whimper ! The fishing on the walls was not that great, there were catches but mostly few and far or skinny returns with a few exceptions.

Best of the month was that bass catches are picking up and the FB group has had a few decent piccys posted on that front. Next up have been conger catches, some decent sizes and a couple of Juniors had a good day on them with their dad on the east, but I will add a word of caution for anglers to please pay attention to the recommended sizes on the website and we do get a few grumbles about small fish being kept and as a rule we do try to encourage sensible fishing.

When on the walls I tend to as if a catch looks decent enough to make 1 meal & if there is even a little doubt people should return those that seem small. It must surprise some to realise that if the small ones go back they may actually grow bigger for catching another time ! weird idea eh

Other catches I hear someone say at the back :), yes there are plaice, catches are on the increase but again please be aware of the sizes on the website, many of the plaice are small and not very thick. While many plaice can be the “right length” often they are so skinny that you would need 2 fish to make enough for one meal.
Again my go too is “will 1 fish make a decent meal?”fish grow, please put them back to grow some more

Thus we get to repeat the “other catches”
Rays have started showing up on the wall, mostly thornbacks but there are undulates amongst the catches and we do try to encourage these to be returned as they are restricted and commercials have a strict catch policy on them with research being carries out towards Devon & Cornwall.
Ive heard whispers of Mullet showing up in the river estuary’s recently so am expecting activity around the marina fairly soon.
I’m not hearing anything about the micro species on the marina yet but that may well be because no one is targeting them or simply not passing on catch info.
SQUID & MACKEREL, yes some have been caught, the tail end of last week saw a cuttle and a squid caught followed by a single mackerel mid week. The next day 2 squid were caught/confirmed as well as a few mackerel on the EAST but since then Ive not really heard anything and there are a few keen squidders that fish the marina on a regular basis.
The walls also saw bream caught over the weekend so hopefully the decent weather with encourage more to show themselves.

Work on the EAST is nearly done and we are waiting for ordered wire to arrive so that the red post wire can be finished allowing us to get the wall fully open.
I dont have a progress update as yet for the west extensions and Night fishing is hopefully starting soon once we get a suitable weather report for a SATURDAY night.
well that is just about it for today, hopefully the weather gods play nice and some decent fishing can be got underway.
until next time, as usual I bid you all ADIEU

Morning world

Happy monday folks.

A quick update for those that have not picked it up from the home page.

Both walls are now open slightly longer hours weather permitting from 6am and close about 6pm
Work on the east progresses and jet washing is nearly done. Once the holes are filled and wires repaired Mark will be able to fully open the EAST WALL.

West Extension will be a little longer as there are quite a lot of repairs needed as well as the obvious jet washing.

And finally some good news fore the tourists & bad news for the anglers A MACKEREL WAS CAUGHT and videoed on the east today …chaaaaarrrrrrrrggggggggegeeeeee
Thats it for today, tight lines all and I bid you all ADIEU
